*World-renowned and Iceland’s most prominent act GusGus have released their 11th studio album ‘Mobile Home’. It’s their first release since 2018, and it’s highly addictive.*

The album also marks a new and very refreshing collaboration with Margrét Magnúsdóttir, singer in the Icelandic electronic band [VÖK](https://open.spotify.com/artist/7oDTyDfeA2JE2jUZztkBj8?si=7fbqKi%5FSR3m5wBBfD%5FG9jQ&ref=therunningkick.eu). Margrét’s vocals have moved seamlessly into the electronic sound of GusGus. It all sounds so natural.

Already in autumn last year, GusGus gave us a tasty teaser with the first single ‘Higher’ that was followed by ‘Stay The Ride’ and ‘Our World’.

Birgir, ‘Biggi’, Þórarinsson and Daníel Ágúst show their quality with every single track on this LP and prove to be masters of transcendence.

‘[Mobile Home](https://open.spotify.com/album/2JZqRROCVZf77H3NLiFcuB?si=gwxMOBNNTkSr-Tee-HsA2w&ref=therunningkick.eu)’ is “a window into a futuristic dystopian world that has been overtaken by machines”. Quite an actual topic as we live in a world that is getting more technological and digitalised. Yes, it brings a lot more effectiveness, but also a lot of uncertainty.

The album starts off with ‘[Stay The Ride](https://open.spotify.com/track/6bxOCXBqC8OpQzV76FXOR7?si=qAeuRdSMQyGzxf3uOOvQdA&ref=therunningkick.eu)’. Daníel describes the song as “the disorientation of a person and their connection to reality”. It’s about the creation of a virtual reality through a smartphone. Musically, ‘Stay The Ride’ is a minimalist synth-infected song. A bit darker and slower, but very seductive. The track invites the listener to stay the ride for a journey through a world wherein machines have taken over. It sounds futuristic and retro at the same time. It is like a blend of new-wave and post-punk with its dance beats and 80s synths. Margrét’s and Daníel’s harmonise so well and really drive the song.

GusGus embrace creative elements of all sorts. So it’s no surprise that they put a lot of love into the videos (see below). The video were directed by Arni & Kinski (GusGus founding members and creative directors Siggi Kinksi and Stéfan Árni).

‘[Higher](https://open.spotify.com/track/10BSvFgbWA1KsJaLZJInyq?si=MmWZa9UDTHqOYMqkUyqyig&ref=therunningkick.eu)’ is a hypnotising, reggae-dub-techno track that builds up tension with every passing second. The listener is carried off into another space of electric beats. Margrét expands the music space with her incredible voice. It has a very captivating groove that’s driven by repetition and a nice rhythmic beat, lively synths, and punchy basslines. The concept of isolation from reality is omnipresent.

‘[Simple Tuesday](https://open.spotify.com/track/4Qav1z5AblBotsYmWjAOWq?si=6b7SysbdT067aqJoFkCKbw&ref=therunningkick.eu)’ is a nice blend of electronic and pop sound. Lyrically, it’s about someone who’s completely lost and searching for something to hold on so that they can be themselves. You can feel this throughout the beats of the song. Yet, the song keeps an optimistic sound. It’s quite a good track for working out by the way. Definitely one of my favourites!

‘[Love Is Alone](https://open.spotify.com/track/1w5B0jTMDwgxtRYlvqKbUa?si=y5R0OD10TGOk5cqt8bBc2A&ref=therunningkick.eu)’ is a slow, quite sad song. It goes deep into motifs of solitude and melancholia. With its dark, but very meditative synth-pop sound it’s an invitation for reflection.

‘[Our World](https://open.spotify.com/track/7cWMsGfr7ZUDtMX7dd4KS0?si=z-tvSXo9Sy2a%5F1lCYztFDA&ref=therunningkick.eu)’ is a bright song with a lot of nice synths. It’s very electrifying, emotive and sensual. The album version is a bit heavier than the single release. I like that version even more. This song proves what a wonderful addition Margrét is to GusGus’s sound and feel. She brings in new elements and they fit so well. It feels like a perfect symbiosis. ‘Our World’ is about the frame that society puts upon each one of us. The frame we carry with us, because people want us to be like this. The song has a high rhythmic intensity. The sound is so GusGus-esque. Vibrating synths infused with a bit of rave. Daníel’s orgasmic voice dances so perfectly with Margrét transcendental vocals in the chorus. It’s a sound explosion that brings you into an ecstatic state of being and helps to escape from reality - at least for a little while.

‘[Original Heartbreak](https://open.spotify.com/track/2K3yBU22DYDmCVmCM6uZIk?si=wUeOdB9pSluTX0l5ot1XzA&ref=therunningkick.eu)’ is also on the slower side of tracks. As the title already indicates, it’s about unrequited love, but also the fragility of the relationship between two people who are attracted to each other. The song has a great beat that lets you dive deep into your thoughts and emotions.

‘[Silence](https://open.spotify.com/track/0Yfesp2dWlyxFleOLl36JI?si=YAfoEw3WQJ6cABW-soJ3XA&ref=therunningkick.eu)’ is a cracking and inventive up-tempo track. It’s hypnotising and immediately draws you in. Exciting synth elements make it sound quite experimental. The whole track feels busy and noisy. You’re pushed forward, you’re on the run, it seems something is chasing you. What a thrilling trip!

‘[The Rink](https://open.spotify.com/track/5tIIJiGKvk3MGiJZLuSV6M?si=OQUK%5F6GySIankCr5mfgxtQ&ref=therunningkick.eu)’ is a dystopian experimental track that lifts you to another sensory level. It reflects the “idea of a struggle between good and evil in this supposedly innocent recreational world”. The listening trip is ecstatic, not only because of the captivating sound but also because of Daníel’s electrifying vocals.

The LP closes with ‘[Flush](https://open.spotify.com/track/5MEX4mJ3pu6zxZHUXavml9?si=Utc5KtN7TbayzDcxxaxgiA&ref=therunningkick.eu)’. According to Biggi, the idea of a flushing toilet definitely played a role in here. It’s about finishing up, clearing the mind and starting over. An instrumental soundtrack and a great ending to this album. You’re definitely flying high when you finish it!

‘Mobile Home’ is exactly what you would expect from GusGus, but better. They sound more mature, sharper and electronically loaded than ever before. It’s a reflection of the fight between the sensitive soul and the mighty machine. ‘Mobile Home’ is an eclectic, dystopian, and infectious music experience - a powerful blend of intense electronic music, synth pop sound, new wave, and dub. Highly recommended!
