It is an October evening. Autumn hasn’t quite made up its mind whether to go for golden colours or rainy days.

I come home and the first thing I do has almost become a ritual over the last few days: I put Johnny Marr’s new record, *The Age of Everything*, on the record player and drop the needle. Volume: right up.

Johnny Marr never disappoints, and this album is no exception. It's his unmistakable sound, the play of a guitar virtuoso. You feel yourself being drawn in and dive into a world of masterful soundscapes that make you forget everything around you.

It's his fifth solo album, produced with his longtime collaborator James Doviak. The ten songs take on modern overwhelm and outside noise through a vibrant, uplifting guitar rock with a relentless forward momentum.

The opening track, 'Spin', sets the tone and offers a glimpse of what is to come on the rest of the album. Its melodic guitar riffs and driving bass line, which has that instantly recognisable distinctive Manc sound, are infectious. It's no wonder I can't help myself but to spin this album over and over again.

'Beyond the Rain' is one of the most emotional songs on the album. Marr was writing it when Noel Gallagher called to tell him that Mani (Gary Mounfield) had just died. It caused Marr to rewrite the lyrics, changing 'sun' to 'son', so it became 'I shine like a Northern son'. It's a beautiful, heartfelt song that touches your soul. It feels like an encouragment to push through the heavy weather of life to a brighter tomorrow. 'Words can never change the weather', but maybe with this track they can.

'It's Time' sounds like a Smiths song recorded in 2026\. Marr delivers a subtle political message over a great, cathartic groove. It's about resisting cynicism and corruption, and it probably sums up how many people feel in an increasingly overwhelming technological world.

One song I really like is ‘Just Once More’, especially because of the amazing, twisting bass line it opens with. Guitar and bass circle around each other unpredictably. Marr knows how to create suspense, but also how to resolve it. The song never really settles, but builds into an incredible groove. It's that frantic and fractured texture that reminds a bit of Siouxsie and the Banshees. 'And the tension comes along / And the daylight drags me on / Every word is said and done / And the meaning gets all wrong'. Fabulous!

My absolute favourite track on the album is 'All in a Life'. It takes the familiar chorus setup and adds layers of instruments and roaring backing vocals from Sheldon. Restless anxiety is magically transformed into celebration, giving the album a powerful closure. You're caught in the mystic eye under the beams and skies with your face in a vacant line. The message stays the same: 'Denied!' Yes, I can feel it!

Johnny Marr embodies the very best of what music has to offer. This album has everything you could wish for. It’s an honest record by a craftsman at full power. A sonic journey that doesn't disappoint and makes you want to spin it again and again. Especially on days like these, when the grey sky hangs over the streets like a veil and we long for those golden hours. This album certainly helps bring that golden glow to our lives.
